Bulging Disc Exercises

When you are experiencing pain and discomfort resulting from a bulging disc, specific exercises recommended by a physical therapist could help alleviate or eliminate your pain. The goal of these exercises is to strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, to increase flexibility and to get blood, oxygen and nutrients flowing to your spine so it can heal more rapidly.

A physical therapist (usually recommended by the physician who arrived at your bulging disc diagnosis) can help you create an exercise plan designed to address your particular symptoms. Generally, it is recommended that you start an exercise program gradually and then build on it over time, so you are certain not to push yourself beyond your limits. In other words, if any exercises cause pain, you may be advised to stop these particular exercises. A physical therapist will also provide detailed instructions on the type of exercises you should perform, how you should perform them, how often you should perform them and in what quantity of repetitions.

The following are some common exercises recommended to address bulging disc pain. We recommend that you consult with your physician and/or physical therapist before attempting any exercise program.

  • Pilates and yoga
  • Elliptical machine and stationary bike workouts
  • Stretching exercises
  • Stability ball exercises
  • Trampoline exercises
